The team

In 2019, the journey of Campcation began when Johanna Raga Waronen, co-founder and CEO, embarked on a camping adventure. As she searched for campsites using her mobile phone during the trip, she quickly realized that finding suitable options online was far from straightforward. Eventually, she had no choice but to spend the first night at a hotel due to the inconvenience of the non digitized market.

Prior to the digital transformation Campcation is driving, campers faced significant challenges. They had to rise at dawn, rely on impromptu visits, and hope for availability on the spot, as advanced bookings were virtually non-existent. Traditional methods such as physical calendars were the norm and plenty of time was spent on administrative tasks that computers can do even better in only a few seconds. The challenges are many and the experience of planning a camping trip can often be marked by uncertainty. There was an absence of a convenient platform where campers could reliably check for site availability, leading to a guess-and-check approach which was less than ideal. Spontaneous visits were common, and most had to arrive early in the day hoping for a vacant spot, given the scarcity of a digital booking options.

Traditional systems, such as physical calendars, were prevalent, resulting in much time and effort expended on administrative tasks, which today's technology can execute in a matter of seconds. These old practices made planning a camping trip an difficult and time-consuming process, as opposed to the stress-free adventure it should be.

However, now, a new generation has emerged, determined to revolutionize this time-honored industry. By embracing digital technology, they seek to usher in a wave of change.

Backers’ perspective

Currently, the travel industry accounts for approximately 10% of global CO2 emissions, with aviation contributing 2.4% of that. Despite rising airfares and an existing economic downturn, an increase in population and prosperity will inevitably lead to a growth in the number of tourists, along with their associated negative consequences. Thus creating more sustainable options for traveling and vacation is crucial in the long run.

"We are very happy to support Campcation in their transition of one of our most popular industries. By facilitating outdoor stays closer to home, Campcation makes tourism more sustainable and thus meets the needs of the new generation of travelers - those who are eager to create unique experiences and memories without compromising the planet or their personal finances" -  Sara Wimmercranz, Founding Partner at BackingMinds.
